English II, Second Quarter, Fifth Week

Last week we reviewed “In the Book, Both, & Head” questions. We also looked at a memoir of a cultural conflict between British and Indian cultures. This week, we’ll examine culture more closely by looking at two other examples of cultural conflict and confusion.

Review “By Any Other Name” (26). Identify central conflict.

Vocab: Conflict = Problem between two people / groups.

Review these dictionary definitions of the words dominant and submissive from Dictionary.com.

dominant
adj.
1. Exercising the most influence or control.
2. Most prominent, as in position; ascendant.

submissive
adj.
Inclined or ready to submit; acknowledging one's inferiority; yielding; obedient; humble.

Define them IN YOUR OWN WORDS! In this story, who is dominant and who is submissive? How does their culture contribute to their being dominant or submissive?

Make a chart comparing British and Indian culture in Clothing, Food, Language, Sports, & Education. Use information from the text to fill it out.

Tuesday, Nov. 16 – Cultural Humor

Quickwrite about things that make you laugh

View Beverly Hillbillies clip. Discuss what makes us laugh. Create Book, Both, & Head questions from the video.

Read aloud “from Dave Barry Does Japan” (41). Assign chunks to Readers.

Wednesday, Nov 17 – Discuss “from Dave Barry Does Japan”

Students will be Readers or Discussion Leaders. Each pair of students is responsible for one chunk of text.
Reader will read a chunk. Discussion Leader leads a whole-class discussion.

Thursday, Nov 18 – Two Worlds in One (Cambodian girl moves to Oregon, USA)

Read “from Children of the River” (51) silently. Write “In the Book, Both, & Head” questions. Discuss your questions and answers.

Friday, Nov 19

One of a writer’s greatest challenges is switching scenes. How does Linda Crew switch from one setting to another? Highlight references to time and place in this story.

Visualize the story. Draw a scene that shows Sundara at school. Base your drawing on the text! Copy out the direct quotations that support your drawing. Be sure to use quotation marks and to cite the page number. Now do the same thing for Sundara at home.

If time, complete the chart “Where Does Sundara Fit In?” (49).
