Centering Prayer (Elective) ~ Monday Nights
Carol Husbands will lead a class on centering prayer based on writings and videos of Father Thomas Keating. Centering Prayer is a method designed to facilitate the development of contemplative prayer by preparing our faculties to cooperate with this gift. It is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; rather, it is to help us develop a new and fuller perspective of prayer.
Foundations of Christian Spirituality (Core Course) ~ Monday Nights
Foundations of Christian Spirituality is a one year core course. The class will be led by Fr. Bruce Wilson and will explore the foundations for Christian spirituality within the biblical tradition. In contrast to the emphasis on doctrinal correctness and institutional loyalty, Christian spirituality focuses on the path of inner awakening and transformation that expresses itself in wisdom and compassion.
Daughters of the King (Elective) ~ Monday Nights
The Daughters of the King is an Order of the National Episcopal Church. The members embrace disciplines of service, study and prayer. Mary Hamilton, who has been a member of this Order for many years, will present a twelve-week class with the intention of establishing a chapter of Daughters of the King at St. Mark’s and preparing the interested women in the tradition of this national Order.
Early Christianities (Elective) ~ Monday Nights
Robert David Ogden will lead discussions on lectures presented through video by a lecturer from a leading university on one of the following topics.
~ Lost Christianities: Christian Scriptures and the Battles over Authentication
~ Early Christianity: The Experience of the Divine
~ From Jesus to Constantine: A History of Early Christianity
~ After the New Testament: The Writings of the Apostolic Fathers.
Each of these is a one year course.
Education for Ministry (Core Course) ~ Monday Nights
Education for Ministry is a four year course taught by Donnelle Gooch that covers biblical, systematic and pastoral theology, and the history of the Church. The intention is to develop and equip the laity for their ministries in the church and the world through an in-depth education in the Christian tradition. This is an extension course offered through The Episcopal Seminary of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Students commit for one year at a time.
Gospel of Thomas (Elective) ~ Wednesday Afternoons
This course explores the collection of Jesus’ sayings in the Gospel of Thomas. These sayings present a rich wisdom tradition that is rooted in Semitic wisdom but also appears to synthesize other streams of wisdom that were current in Jesus’ time. They represent the early Christian communities that understood Jesus chiefly as a “moshalim”, a master teacher of wisdom who continues to be present as our teacher and guide, leading us back to our true selves and to our true Source.
Practical Spirituality (Core Course) ~ Wednesday Mornings
Practical Spirituality is a one year core course on practical spiritual principles that build a foundation for a discerning life. Each lesson clarifies a particular principle of practical spirituality.
