Our multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and multi-generational Catholic Christian community will serve with compassion, dignity and respect. Como discípulos de Cristo Jesús nosotros los parroquianos de la Iglesia de San Juan en San Marcos, nos reunimos a Orar, Celebrar, Educar y Evangelizar. Nuestra comunidad Católica Cristiana es multicultural, multilingual y multigeneracional y nos extendemos a servirles con compasión, dignidad y respeto. Obedecemos el llamado de nuestro Cristo Jesús de ser fieles en la Mayordomía de nuestro Tiempo, Talento y Tesoro.
Precepts of the Church
1. All Christ's faithful have the duty to preserve communion with, and promote the growth of, the church, lead a holy life, and strive that the Gospel reaches the whole world. (Canons 209-211,225).
2. All Catholics are obliged to accept the infallibly declared teaching of the church (Canon 750), and to follow in obedience the pastors of the church when they declare this teaching and discipline (Canon 212).
3. They are obliged to receive Holy Communion at least once per year during the Easter Season (Canon 920).
4. They must attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation, abstaining from such work and business which would inhibit worship on those days (Canon 1247).
5. They are bound to confess all "grave" or "mortal" sins, and are recommended to confess "venial sins" (Canon 988). Grave sins must be confessed at least once per year (Canon 989).
6. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinence (Canons 1249-50) Other days of fasting and / or abstinence are regulated locally, as are Fridays, when the church insists all Catholics must perform some act of penance.
7. In order to be married, a Catholic should have been confirmed (Canon 1065), and must be married before a priest and two witnesses (Canon 1108), unless a special dispensation has been obtained.
8. All have a duty to provide for the needs of the church, for its worship and support of its ministers. All must promote social justice, helping the poor from their own resources (Canon 222).
9. All have a duty to grow in the knowledge of Christian teaching appropriate to their capacity (Canon 229); and to educate their children in accordance with the teaching of the church (Canon 226). Parents are obliged to choose those ways which can best do this (Canon 793), especially by sending their children to schools which provide for Catholic education (Canon 798).
10. Parents are obliged to have their children baptized within the first few weeks of birth (Canon 867), and to ensure that their children who have reached the age of reason are prepared for confession and communion (Canon 914).
